Tips for Keeping Your Home Safe on Halloween

keeping your home safe on halloweenWe’ve all seen the halloween movies full of pranks from houses being teepeed with toilet paper to creepy murderers coming after strangers so how do you keep all of the paranoias at bay on Halloween? Here are some tips for keeping your home safe on Halloween and avoiding those creepy crawly fears.

Safety with Decorations

Setting up decorations can be so exciting when it comes to holidays but its important to do it safely. If you have carved pumpkins be sure that you place your pumpkin away from any curtains or flammable objects. An even better option than a lit candle is to place a battery operated candle or a colorful glowstick inside your pumpkin. Not only is it safer but a glowstick can give and added effect that you wouldn’t normally see on pumpkins.

Though little decor lights aren’t as big of a threat as they use to be, be sure to turn off all lights before ending your night. You never know when an accident could happen or an electrical problem that could start a fire.

  • Older kids can maneuver around easily but for those little ones its important to remove all garden hoses, toys, and other potential tripping hazards from your front yard and walkways.
  • Make sure everyone has a clear view of where they are walking but checking outdoor lights and replace burned out bulbs where needed. You can even add more lighting for extra safety
  • Clean up all yard debris, even wet leaves or snow to keep all walking surfaces firm.
  • If you have overly excited pets when the door bell rings, its best to restrain them so they do not jump on or bite a trick-or-treater in excitement.

Having a home security system makes a world of difference when it comes to feeling secure at home but high monthly fees and lack of diversity is usually what deter people away. However, I’ve found a new system that I like to call my virtual home sitter. The Nexia™ Home Intelligence system is a new and innovative home security system that keeps your home safe with the use of your smart devices.

Nexia’s all-in-one mobile app (for iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices) allows you to monitor and control all of your smart devices from anywhere in the world; you can check in at any time to make sure you turned off the coffee pot or locked the front door. Even better,Nexia’s reliable and secure wireless system can run your home automatically so it looks like someone is home, from turning on lights to watering the lawn.

So how is that possible? Well Nexia’s integrated system features devices that communicate with each other to create a smart home in a sense. By using their HD Indoor and Outdoor Security Cameras you can see everything that’s going on in and outside of your house or if you don’t want a constant feed of video you can use their Z-Wave motion sensor that will send you video any time any motion is detected. These are just two of their devices that I love but they have MANY more from deadbolts that automatically lock themselves if someone forgets to leak and smoke detectors to their new advanced diagnostics feature that can detect when something is wrong with your HVAC unit. It really can’t get any easier or cooler than this.

So while you’re walking around with your little trick-or-treater you can be certain in knowing that your home is safe at the palm of your hand with Nexia. No worries about leaving the lights on/off or the door unlock since you can change that with a couple of taps on your smart device.

I’ll have to check out Nexia, I like that I can control it from a smartphone! I agree about clearing your walkways and areas trick or treaters might walk. A couple years ago, my toddler had a fall on some steps visiting a house with a garden hose right on the steps.

An outside camera is a great idea – it’s hard when you want to take the little ones trick or treating but at the same time want to stay home and keep your home from getting broken into (or egged) by someone who knows you’re out trick or treating!
