The day I put on Vibrams FiveFingers shoes was the day I made one of the best running decisions of my young running life. What brought me to them? Well, I had a friend who had bought a pair and I thought they were the silliest but coolest thing ever. For those of you who don’t know me…I HATE wearing shoes. I will tolerate flip flops and sandals but actual shoes? Get out of here!
Some time passed after laying eyes on my first pair but they stayed on my mind until I finally decided to research them and eventually go and try on a pair. I looked around online for a store and found that REI sold them so I drove down. At first, I wasn’t sure which pair to try on since there were so many different styles. Thankfully the sales associates there were very knowledgeable and super helpful. They were able to answer all of my questions, size up my foot, and help me narrow it down to 2 pairs which I loved both. In the end, I decided to go with the KMD Sport LS. This pair was a little thicker than the others, had a more rugged sole, stretchy laces, and I loved the colors of course.
Falling for Vibrams
The first few days I had them, I just walked around and worn them casually. It took my left big toe a little bit of time to get used to them as it felt as though it was suffocating….though keep in mind, it’s mostly psychological since I hate shoes. After I got used to wearing them I decided to go for a light run. I was warned ahead of time that five fingers will make you work muscles that you’re not used to using when running so to take it slow. I was just getting into running so I knew this wasn’t going to be an issue.
Little by little I started to fall in love with Vibrams the more I wore them and suddenly I was obsessed. Even to this day, I sell these bad boys like I work for the company. They have been the ONLY shoe that has felt like I’m not wearing shoes and that have felt natural. I have gone running on all terrains, I’ve soaked them in mud(though this isn’t recommended for this style), and I’ve hiked. These shoes have been put through a lot and now, over a year later, they are still going strong! I’ve even bought a couple more pairs since then! Oh, and the socks that go with them by injinji.com are amazing!
I know this post is mostly me bragging about them but there will be another post that explains my choice in buying these and why I continue to wear them soon…in the meantime, guess who else loves Vibrams? Stephen Colbert, Channing Tatum, Hugh Jackman, Kate Hudson, Kristen Stewart, Matthew McConaughey, and Scarlett Johansson to name a few.
