Have you ever worried that your child’s car seat isn’t installed correctly? This fear is not uncommon for parents but Allstate and Phoenix Children’s Hospital have teamed up to bring awareness, knowledge, and fun to local parents with the Barnyard Booster Bash.
The Awareness
Did you know motor vehicle injuries are one of the leading causes of death among children in the United States? Believe it or not, many child safety seats are often installed and/or used incorrectly. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, 3 out of 4 car seat effectiveness can be reduced due to the misuse of the seat.
That’s why Allstate and Phoenix Children’s Hospital have teamed up to bring awareness, knowledge, and fun to local parents about car and booster seat safety.
The Knowledge
With so many opinions, some parents become confused about when to switch their child from rear-facing to forward-facing to booster. There is a lot of information out there so below are a few tips to keep your little passenger(s) safe, along with more information here.
Which Seat is Right for My Child?
As a basic rule of thumb, you should look at switching out your child’s car seat once they have outgrown the height and/or weight of the seat they are currently in. If you aren’t quite sure where your child falls in this spectrum, please refer to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration‘s car seat finder tool. Here you can find the right fit for your little one.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also suggests that if a car seat is ever involved in a moderate or severe accident that you replace the seat immediately. In a minor accident, car seats do not need to be replaced, however.
Examples of a minor accident would include no visible damage to the car seat, no injuries to the passengers in the car and that the car is still in driving condition.
Booster Seats
Many think booster seats don’t serve a purpose which is a highly misleading thought. After your child outgrows their forward-facing car seat, they should move over to a belt-positioning booster seat until they reach the appropriate size for a seat belt to fit correctly.
In accordance with the CDC, correctly using a booster seat for children ages 4-8 can reduce the risk of serious injuries in a car accident by 45%.
The Fun
Since car seat safety is near and dear to my heart, I have teamed up with Allstate and Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH) to support Barnyard Booster Bash, a family-friendly and FREE event on Nov. 2. Allstate makes safety in the community one of their top priorities so teaming up with PCH to create this event is the perfect match!
During the month of October, Allstate agencies across the Valley will be collecting new booster seats for Phoenix Children’s Hospital to distribute to families in need. Once the drive is complete on October 31, Allstate and PCH will host the Barnyard Booster Bash at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, AZ.
This free event will run from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, Nov. 2 and will include a free booster seat (while supplies last), professional car seat and booster installation inspections, as well as face painting, arts and crafts, a photobooth, and more! You can visit the event page here for more information.
I personally will be attending myself and can’t wait to join in on the fun. If you need a booster seat for your kid(s), please feel free to come by. If you can donate to the cause, you can drop off new and unopened booster seats at the following Allstate agency locations, or order this recommended booster seat and have it shipped to a participating Allstate agency.
