Unlike many families that I know, we do not live very close to our family. Our closest family members live over an hour away and they are my in-laws. My boys absolutely adore their Papa so when it’s a trip to his house they are always so excited. We visit when we can but not as often as we like. Here are some tips for road tripping we learned along the way.
Bring Toys
It doesn’t matter the age of your baby when it comes to toys in the car. Any toy that lights up and/or makes noise is gold when it comes to a baby. I have learned just the sound or light is enough to stimulate them to focus on something besides boredom. Make sure you pack a variety of different toys as their attention span can vary quickly.
Pack More than You Need
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about traveling with kids is that you can never pack enough. I have gone so many times packing what I thought was enough to find out it was not. With a baby, you can have blowouts in the middle of the road and be devastated when you reach into your diaper bag only to find you didn’t pack extra outfits.
The same goes for wipes, diapers, snacks, and more. Always over pack if you’re traveling for a long period of time or on a plane.
Get Comfy
From birth, Bodie was not a fan of riding in the car for long periods of time. We could get away with 30 minutes tops before he would get angry. I envy all of you mamas who have kiddos that fall asleep at the drop of a dime in the car. We tried many things to make the trip better, including having someone sit next to B but nothing seemed to work.
Ding Ding! We found the solution! Mamas, it was switching Bodie to a convertible car seat that changed everything. I’ve always used infant car seats until baby can sit up on their own then I’ve switched them over. Turns out, some babies just aren’t comfortable in an infant car seat. As soon as we swapped him over it was like night and day.
