Living in Arizona, it is so important to make sure you stay cool in the summer. Becoming severely dehydrated or having a heat stroke is a real possibility if you aren’t careful. When we decide to venture outside we always make it a point to pack or purchase cold food options. It may sound silly but it makes all the difference. Here are 3 simple food options to keep you cool in summer.
Water Rich Fruit & Veggies
When you think of summer, what fruit do you think of? Nine times out of ten, it’s going to be a melon of some sort and more specifically, watermelon. Most melons contain 90% or more water so they are great option to snack on when you’re out in the summer heat. Not a fruit fan? No problem! Fresh cucumbers are also water rich packing in a whopping 95% water content. You can even do a light side salad as lettuce is also filled with water.
Fresh Cold Sandwiches
One of the ways we like to stay cool during the summer is by having a fresh, cold sandwich relaxing in the shade. Our go-to sandwich place is Jersey Mike’s. I love that unlike many large competitors in the area, Jersey Mike’s is freshly sliced when you order. No precut meat is happening here which truly makes it a sub above. My boys typically won’t touch a deli sub but when its Jersey Mike’s, they chow down like they’ve never tasted a better sandwich in their lives. With so many options and picky kids who love their subs, you can’t go wrong!
Skip the Ice Cream
As appealing as ice cream sounds on a hot summer day, it actually does the opposite. The heavy fat content in ice cream makes your body work harder to digest which in turn makes you warmer. Opting for something like a popsicle or an Italian ice is a much better food option to keep you cool in summer.
