Whether your little athlete is an all star on a team or in your own backyard, playing in the summer heat can take a toll on their hydration. On a hot summer day, kids can lose moisture quickly through sweating and ignore the signs of being thirsty. They get so wrapped up in their activity that they don’t realize the dangers of dehydration coming. Throwing their salt and fluid balances all out of order, you can end up with a very sick kid.
Signs of Dehydration
Though you may think your kid sweating a lot, dry lips, or lack of energy is the only sign, these are actually just the early signs of dehydration. If your child starts presenting with any of these symptoms, it’s best to take a break and recuperate. If not, your little athlete could present with more severe symptoms. Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, disorientation, and the lack of sweating which are all signs of heat exhaustion or a heat stroke. Heat strokes require immediate medical attention and can lead to death if untreated.
Keeping Your Little Athlete Hydrated
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends giving your little ones something to drink every 20 minutes whether they are thirsty or not. Kids tend to not realize they’re thirsty until they’ve lost 2-3% of their body weight. At that point, they’re more than likely already dehydrated. You can give your little athlete artificial sports drinks and juice but the most vital option to give them is water.
Personally, we choose to hydrate our little athlete with BODYARMOR. What is that? It’s a flavored coconut water sports drink. Why coconut water? Unlike regular water, coconut water is a low-calorie drink containing 95% water. Coconut water contains vital minerals like potassium for brain and nervous system support, magnesium which plays a key role in energy production, and cytokinins which slow down the development of cancer cells. Best part yet? Coconut water contains lots of antioxidants which helps knock out those pesky free radicals in our bodies.
Hydrating with BODYARMOR
Now that you know a little about coconut water, let me fill you in on why I choose BODYARMOR overall sports drinks. BODYARMOR is no stranger to our household being a staple in our home for 3 years now. We don’t even like coconut water but BODYARMOR knows how to mix in our favorite natural flavorings to create a healthier alternative to artificial options. With BODYARMOR your little athlete can still drink a premium sports drink without consuming artificial sweeteners and sodium which a standard diet provides enough of.
BODYARMOR is available at your local Fry’s and provides superior hydration in 9-great tasting flavors: fruit punch, orange mango, strawberry banana, tropical punch, blackout berry, mixed berry, grape, watermelon strawberry, and lemonade. This year alone they launched two new products, BODYARMOR LYTE(same goodness with only 20 calories) and BODYARMOR Water. I personally love orange mango(no surprise) and blackout berry the best while my husband prefers mixed berry and tropical punch and my oldest loves them all!
We aren’t the only ones who love BODYARMOR either. Professional athletes like Kobe Bryant, James Harden, Mike Trout, Dustin Johnson, Andrew Luck, Richard Sherman, Dez Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Buster Posey, and Skylar Diggins love it so much they became ambassadors and shareholders for the brand.
